About This Spot

Stepping into Sanshu-tei is like entering a quiet pause nestled within the heart of Nara’s Isuien Garden. Here, time slows noticeably, inviting visitors to sink into the gentle hum of a traditional Japanese teahouse where the outside world softens into a serene backdrop. The air carries a calmness that mingles with the subtle scent of tatami and wood, while delicate views of the garden’s foliage stretch through paper-paneled windows, framing moments of quiet reflection.

This is a place where meals are more than just nourishment—they are an invitation to experience simplicity and care. The menu is thoughtfully curated, focusing on regional flavors that echo the rhythms of the seasons and the heritage of the area. Whether savoring a light bowl of noodles with dipping sauce or the humble richness of mugimeshi with tororo, each bite feels like a gentle connection to Nara’s culinary traditions, carefully tended and patiently served.

The pace here is unhurried, encouraging guests to linger over their cups of tea or a subtly sweet matcha ice cream, surrounded by an atmosphere that feels both private and welcoming. The hospitality softly underscores this feeling—with attentive yet unobtrusive hosts who make room for moments of peaceful respite, bringing a sense of warmth that complements the historic elegance of the space.

Sanshu-tei’s charm lies in its blend of timelessness and intimacy. It’s a quiet refuge ideal for those wanting to step away from the bustling temple paths, offering a rare chance to pause and breathe within a setting where history and nature intertwine gently. This is a dining experience that invites you to slow down, appreciate the beauty in simple pleasures, and leave feeling quietly restored.

Great place to rest and relax after a long walk in Nara. Very convenient as it is in the Isuien Garden. The staff are very accommodating

The most majestic traditional Japanese restaurant with absolutely spectacular views and wonderful service. Great if you want to try real Japanese food. Such a serene experience.

This place is away from the crowded main area of the way to temple where you have to queue for food. It is very private and quaint where you can take a break to enjoy a peaceful Japanese style dinning experience. Their food is simple and only a few choices on the menu. We ordered the noodles with dipping sauce and unagi rice. I suggest to just go for the noodles which cost 1,100Yen. The noodle and broth is a pair in heaven. You can hear the locals slurping down the the noodles happily. They also serve tea with the meal and you can ask for refill.

Sanshu-tei is a historic teahouse and restaurant inside Isuien Garden. Its name means “Pavilion of Three Beauties,” a title given by a Buddhist priest, and the building itself originally belonged to the Kiyosumi family — wealthy Edo-period textile merchants — before being moved to this garden. Today it serves traditional dishes such as mugi-meshi with tororo, unagi sets, and several kinds of tea. I ordered only matcha with a small monaka sweet (¥1000), but the experience was excellent. The staff were kind, attentive, and efficient. The greatest value of Sanshu-tei is the view: you sit on tatami overlooking the garden’s ponds, stone bridges, mossy paths, and seasonal flowers. Drinking tea while watching the landscape is one of the most peaceful moments you can have in Nara. A calm, beautiful place and very much worth visiting.

By far the best tea-in-a-beautiful-garden experience that I had in Japan! Stellar service, really respectful and helpful. Fair price (¥1000 for a matcha/sweets set). Beautiful location and atmosphere. You can sit on a tatami next to a window and I was given a permission to open the window and enjoy the garden views properly. Love for this place!

Enjoy your lunch like a boss. Looking garden scenery while eating nice dish or just an ice cream. A bit regret of seeing this small garden instead of paying lunch here and enjoying the view
